Vacuum Chrome Plating System

What is Magnetron Sputtering Vacuum Metalizing?

  • Magnetron sputtering is a form of PVD coating technology. The vacuum chamber is filled with an inert gas, such as argon. By applying a high voltage, a glow discharge is created, accelerating ions to the target surface.
  • Reactive sputtering can be achieved by adding gases like nitrogen or acetylene to react with ejected materials.
  • Magnetic fields increase plasma density in front of the target, resulting in higher efficiency, increased sputter rates, and improved ion bombardment.

How the Process is Done

  • Parts are sprayed with a basecoat to provide a smooth surface.
  • Parts are racked and placed into the sealed vacuum chamber.
  • Argon gas is introduced in a continuous flow.
  • Electricity creates an active Argon plasma field in front of the cathode (containing magnets and the target plate).
  • Positively charged Argon atoms are accelerated through the magnetic field to hit the negative charged target.
  • Target atoms are "shot" onto the surface of the part continuously.
  • The part receives a top coat for final protection.
