Distal radius fracture is a common trauma in the elderly because of the high frequency of osteoporosis in this age group. Among hand and forearm fractures, fractures of the distal radius comprise the largest portion (44 percent). These fractures occur commonly in two distinct populations: youth involved in sports with high-energy falls, and seniors with osteoporotic bones with low-energy falls.
